About

32 Years of the West Highland Way

Scotland's premier long distance route enjoys world-class status and attracts an international clientel. The 96 mile path takes in some of the most ruggedly beautiful scenery in Scotland, far from the cares and pressures of modern day living. More than thirty years ago, Tom Hunter and his associates proposed an idea for a long distance route, in order to encourage local Scots to get out and reconnect with the natural environment on their doorstep.

FRONTIER HOLIDAYS & WEST HIGHLAND WAY

In 2010, Frontier Holidays main office base relocated from an Andalucian white mountain village to the Scottish village that serves as the gateway to the West Highland Way - Milngavie. Working in partnership with local government, East Dunbartonshire Council, we work to promote local tourism and offer a free information service to visitors to the area.

Commemorating The WHW Pioneers

East Dunbartonshire Council and Frontier Holidays marked the opening of the office, at an event in Spring 2010. This was also a chance to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the inauguration of the West Highland Way. Guest of Honour, Tom Hunter, was honoured as one of the pioneers of the route.

Tom said, " We hoped a few dozen walkers a year would take up our idea and get out there into our wonderful countryside...we never dreamed it would draw so many liked minded people from all across the world.."

Frontier Director, Callum Christie, was delighted to present Tom with a framed WHW Log Book and Certificate. "Tom's contribution to the international appreciation of Scotland's natural environment, not to mention the Scottish economy and our quality of life in general, cannot be overstated. All of us, who have enjoyed the West Highland Way, owe him and his colleagues a huge debt of gratitude"
