WHW Info

Walkers aged from 8 - 78 take on the route annually and make the distance. However, this long distance path definitlely poses a reasonable level of challenge for all.

Some stretches are tricky - for example, Loch Lomond north of Inversnaid has a difficult path that requires great care, there are a couple of tough ascents such as Conic Hill and the Devil’s Staircase, (and to a certain degree the climb into Lairig Mhor from Kinlochleven), with some sections such as Rannoch Moor that are  rather exposed. Weather is very variable in Scotland and has the greatest impact on walking conditions. For this reason the WHW is considered “open” between early-April and mid-October. You are advised to be prepared for all 4 seasons in one day.

Distances

We recommend you consider carefully how far you are able to walk each day. 7 days and 7 overnights is by far the most popular duration. Baggage transfers are popular with the vast majority of walkers, be they experienced or novice. This will make a noticeable impact on the ease with which you tackle the WHW.

Support, Back Up and Emergency Services

Scotland's Rescue Services are first rate and rarely required on the West Highland Way.

Our offices in Milngavie offer support during office hours, so do pop in and pick up one of our cards.  You can also  pick up information on emergency services and the weather outlook. We post daily weather & weekly weather reports.

If you choose to have your holiday arranged & booked for you, most providers will offer you an emergency support contact number.
